# Engaged Inquiry > Design practice for the AI era. The governing principle precedes the build. The design document is the product. The screens are the consequence. Engaged Inquiry is a Toronto-based design practice founded by Parth Upadhye. This site demonstrates the argument of the book *Design for the AI Era: Paradigm Shift* — that every digital experience must be governed by a design document before AI touches the build. The site is itself a governed system. It was built from a governing document using the Catenator specification standard and an Intent to Implementation (I2I) pipeline. The build is the consequence of the spec. ## The argument - [The reckoning](https://engagedinquiry.com/design/reckoning): Four decisions that stripped the governing layer from digital design. AI made the absence visible. - [The governing principle](https://engagedinquiry.com/design/governing-principle): The decision that precedes every other. What it is, why it disappears, and why it matters now. - [Hidden design](https://engagedinquiry.com/design/hidden-design): How an engineering choice became a design assumption. The twelve-column grid was never a design system. - [Slop](https://engagedinquiry.com/design/slop): Slop predates AI by thirty years. AI made it scale. - [Content creators](https://engagedinquiry.com/design/content-creators): Your content reaches everyone the same way. The platform does not know the difference. - [Prior art](https://engagedinquiry.com/design/prior-art): A thirty-year-old method the design field never named. - [Spec before AI](https://engagedinquiry.com/technical/spec-before-ai): Any AI can convert a design document into a Catenator specification. - [DITA content](https://engagedinquiry.com/technical/dita-content): Structured content and the governance argument. ## The standard - [Catenator](https://engagedinquiry.com/catenator): The open standard for machine-readable product specifications. - [The coordinate model](https://engagedinquiry.com/catenator/coordinate-model): Descriptors × views × -ilities. Every spec entry is a coordinate. - [Descriptors](https://engagedinquiry.com/catenator/descriptors): Thirteen descriptors — domain, model, component, service, operation, actor, event, rule, process, integration, utility, risk, system. - [Minimal valid spec](https://engagedinquiry.com/catenator/minimal-spec): The five required fields. How a spec begins. - [The YAML format](https://engagedinquiry.com/catenator/yaml-format): Schema reference at working level. - [Minimal spec example](https://engagedinquiry.com/catenator/example-minimal): Café table ordering — a single macro, two mesos, three micros. - [[sic] spec example](https://engagedinquiry.com/catenator/example-sic): Complete spec for a physical publishing system. Three macros, full assembly pipeline. ## The books - [Design for the AI Era: Paradigm Shift](https://engagedinquiry.com/books/design-for-the-ai-era): The book that names the paradigm shift. Available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H5FWQY7L - [Different blacks and other essays](https://engagedinquiry.com/books/different-blacks): Essays on the assumptions embedded in what designers call black. ## The practice - [Design path](https://engagedinquiry.com/design): For creative practitioners — designers, creative directors, design leads. - [Technical path](https://engagedinquiry.com/technical): For builders — developers, architects, engineering leads. - [Contact](https://engagedinquiry.com/contact): Engaged Inquiry takes on specification work. press@engagedinquiry.com ## Optional - [GitHub — Catenator standard](https://github.com/engagedinquiry/catenator-standard): The full Catenator vocabulary and standard, publicly available.
