Different blacks and other essays

There is a black that hides. And there is a black that does not let you hide.
These essays begin with that distinction and follow it through twenty-two domains — fitness, medicine, architecture, design, software, employment, religion, politics, wealth, and others — each one a field where the category compresses the particular, where the system was calibrated to an average person who does not exist, and where individual variation is treated as deviation from a norm that was never neutral.
What the dropdown menu cannot hold is not a failure of the person who doesn't fit. It is a property of dropdown menus.
